Reading Program for the Elderly

Through its first three years of operation, Reading to the Others developed a network of volunteers who read to blind people, elderly in care homes as well as other organizations for people with disabilities that could not read. Programs have taken place mainly in Athens, Thessaloniki, Irakleio and Chania. Reading to the Others created one of the largest volunteer groups for NGOs in Greece and trains and supports them with the help of its staff.

The grant regards the organization of a reading program for 10 care homes in Athens, 1 care home in Irakleio and 1 in Chania. The organization will also run private sessions for isolated and blind elderly in villages in Crete and Chios. The program is targeted towards isolated elderly in order to provide them with companionship, but also to those elderly that are unable to read due to illness or blindness. The program will provide reading sessions to an estimated 190 isolated elderly each week and train 70 new volunteers specifically for this project.
