The Association of Volunteers for Assistance to the Patients in Healthcare Institutions was founded in 2007 with the aim to provide care to lonely patients of the Attica public hospitals.

The Association assigns volunteers to assist lonely patients with various bureaucratic processes like health booklet renewal and examinations receipt and accompany them to various locations including rehabilitation centers and other hospitals after their release from the hospital. The theoretical training of volunteers lasts 7 weeks and covers 14 subjects, including elderly patients. All subjects are taught by experts on a volunteer basis. For their practical training, the new volunteers attend 5 individual assistance shifts that are performed by experienced volunteers.

Τhe grant regards the implementation of a program that will provide low-income elderly with basic needs such as food, social support and companionship, in order to alleviate their needs and loneliness. The visits will be carried out by qualified and fully trained volunteers. The volunteers will provide assistance under the supervision of social workers, who plan the appropriate assistance for each individual. The program will support an estimated 70 elderly in their homes. Furthermore, an additional 150 new volunteers will be trained and added to the program thus contributing to its sustainability and continuation.
