GIVMED has a dual purpose: to connect leftover medicine with nonprofit organizations that need it, as well as to inform and educate the public regarding wasted medicine. Every year in Greece, at least 34 million boxes of medicine expire and are thrown away. GIVMED has created a website & smartphone application through which users can record their medicine and are informed about the nonprofit organizations that need it. A user has the option of choosing which nonprofit organization can receive the medicine that he/she wishes to donate. Since 2016, GivMed has provided over 35,000 boxes of medicine, valued at almost €340,000, through a network of 150 organizations that include nonprofit organizations, geriatric units, and social pharmacies.

Support to Care Homes with PPE and Disinfectants

During the Covid-19 crisis, some of the most vulnerable organizations, non-profit care-homes housing elderly patients, were left without crucial personal protective equipment (PPE) and no way to source or purchase them, especially as equipment was in very short supply. This endangered the lives of the care-home’s elderly patients and the health of their staff. TIMA provided a grant to Givmed, to source and provide crucial PPE equipment to care-homes across Greece. Together, both Givmed and TIMA managed to source 22,250 surgical masks, 150,000 single-use gloves, 300 protective goggles and 390 litres of disinfectant covering two months’ worth of supplies for 1,312 people; enough to provide vital protection and significant relief to these NGO’s and their elderly patients.

The care homes include:

  • Nea Ionia Panagia Eleousa Care Home (Athens)
  • Charitable Institution “The Good Samaritan”
  • Welfare Charitable Association of Moschato Merimna (Athens)
  • Charitable Society of Athens, Home for the Elderly (Athens)
  • Association for Regional Development and Mental Health Pentelis E.P.A.P.S.Y. (Athens)
  • Chariseio Care Home (Thessaloniki)
  • Asylo Aniaton of Patra (Patra)
