It was founded in 1986, to house the collection of Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris. Since then it has grown in size to accommodate new acquisitions, obtained either through direct purchases or through donations by important collectors and institutions. The Museum hosts the Cycladic Collection, the Ancient Greek Collection and the Ancient Cypriot Collection. The Museum places an emphasis on education, with an array of educational programs designed to address a varied audience of all ages and backgrounds. Recently it launched the umbrella program “Together at the Museum” that is directed to children with special needs, mentally and physically disabled adult groups, the homeless, and elderly individuals. The aim of the program is to increase the number of these groups visiting the museum.
“Wise Friends, Together at the Museum” Program
The grant regards the creation of a multi-faceted program for the accessibility of elderly visitors to the Museum of Cycladic Art titled “Wise Friends, Together at the Museum”. Guided visits will be offered to the elders in groups of 30; 1,500 elderly members of the Open Protection Centers for the Elderly of the Municipality of Athens will visit the Museum for free in the course of 12 months. Transportation from the Centers to the Museum and refreshments will also be provided. Additionally, the physical access of the Museum will be improved as well as the accessibility to collections, programs and services through the provision of specialized equipment. Lastly, the Museum staff will participate in an interactive, simulation training program in order to better serve elderly visitors. This innovative training is based on international best practices and research studies, and it will be implemented by gerontologists with related experience. Through the “Wise Friends, Together at the Museum” program, the Museum of Cycladic Art will become the first senior friendly museum in Greece.
