Care at Home Program & Vehicle

The Nestor Psychogeriatric Association was founded in 2001 and provides services to senior citizens who suffer from dementia and psychiatric illnesses.

Since 2002, the organization has been operating the only integrated Alzheimer’s center in Greece, including two Day Centers for persons with dementia and a clinic for short-term hospitalization of dementia patients. Additionally, Nestor operates two psychogeriatric care homes for elders with mental health issues. In cooperation with the social services of 5 Municipalities, the Nestor Psychogeriatric Association operates memory clinics and provides psychiatric services. It also runs an SOS line for dementia caregivers. More than 4,500 elderly persons are the yearly recipients of the various services that the Association provides and more than 250 patients with dementia are hospitalized in the short-term clinic each year.

“Care at Home” Program & Vehicle

 

The grant regards the implementation of a “Care at Home” Program and the purchase of a vehicle. The “Care at Home” Program targets elders who have just been diagnosed with dementia. A psychologist offers psychological support to both patients and caregivers. An occupational therapist provides information regarding creative activities at home and aid with dementia related changes in the living environment of those concerned. The program’s goal is to prolong the presence of dementia patients in their home, thus avoiding institutionalization. The vehicle is used for the transport of elders with dementia to the day centers. The secondary use of the vehicle is for the transport of the care homes’ residents to various recreational activities.
