Over the years, it has evolved into a public General Hospital with all major medical departments/clinics. Sotiria Hospital has approximately 650 beds and 1,100 hospital staff. It should be noted that many of Sotiria Hospital’s patients are elderly and chronic patients. This is also evidenced by the fact that the hospital specializes in pulmonary and thoracic diseases, conditions which are more common in the elderly. The Association of the Friends of Patients of Sotiria Hospital was founded in 2005 by the initiative of Hospital employees. The Association’s mission is to support patients in need, as well as members of their families, financially and psychologically. In 2015, 80% of the Association’s beneficiaries were people aged 65 or older.

Support of Patients and Operating Support

The grant regards the economic support of elderly patients in need, operating support of the association through the provision of administrative assistance, and capacity building for the Association. Various financial expenses for elderly patients in need are covered, including medical and nursing care, pharmaceuticals, housing utilities and transportation from the hospital. The operating support will give a boost to the organization to broaden the assistance it offers to patients and also potentially expand the Association’s activities. The capacity building will contribute to the training of the administrative personnel and Board members; this will ultimately help the organization mature and develop its fund-raising strategy.
