ActionAid Hellas began operating in 1998. Amongst its many activities, it implements a series of awareness-raising campaigns and educational programs in Greece, with the goal of sensitizing society on matters of poverty, social exclusion and racism. In 2015, ActionAid Hellas started implementing programs for refugees and more recently, the social welfare program “Community Center”. The Community Center offers a variety of social services to both adults and children. These services include psychosocial support, legal advisory, employment placement, capacity-building, and learning of new skills. The vision is for the Center to function at the core of the local community and offer innovative services. The ultimate goal is to empower the most vulnerable social groups so that they can face the multiple challenges that the economic crisis has brought them. For the operation of the Center ActionAid Hellas will collaborate closely with the Municipality of Athens and its social services department.

The grant regards the provision of psychosocial support, legal advisory and employment placement services at the Community Center for the Athens residents over 50. The Center initiated its operation in collaboration with the Municipality of Athens in April 2017. During the first 3 months of operation, 48% of the beneficiaries were over the age of 50. Recipients of the Community Center’s services are people who have been hit the hardest by the economic crisis.
