Global Brigades Greece: Free eye examination program for seniors

Global Brigades Greece, through a grant of the TIMA Charitable Foundation, has implemented a free eye examination program for vulnerable senior citizens in the Municipality of Athens. Over 1,000 seniors were examined at the 25 Open Protection Centers for the Elderly (OPCEs) in the Municipality of Athens. Over 350 seniors who were examined had eye issues and needed further examination. As a result, approximately 300 pairs of free eyeglasses were given to seniors. The program demonstrated the importance of preventive eye screening and in many cases, glaucoma, advanced cataract, and other eye issues were detected in seniors that so far had been undiagnosed. Early diagnosis plays a key role in reducing the risk of health deterioration and improving the quality of life for the beneficiaries.
