Geographically it is the largest region in Crete yet the lowest in population. It is exclusively comprised of villages and no cities. Most of its villages have between 50-70 inhabitants, most of them over the age of 65. Due to its demographics, LSS is known as the “Aged Metropolis”. The Metropolis operates various social programs at the village of Fourfouras, through its affiliated nonprofit organization Cultural and Social Center of Amari “S.Nektarios”.  The Center, apart from a church, offers a gym, a library, a lecture series on various topics of interest, byzantine music and musical instrument classes, traditional Greek dancing, parents’ groups whereby group counseling is carried out, and a Hot Meal Program.  The Hot Meal Program involves the daily delivery of 2 meals to the homes of approximately 130 seniors.

Vehicle

The grant regards the purchase of a van that will be used exclusively for transporting the food of the Hot Meal Program to the residents of the villages. The van will be insulated in order to meet food hygiene and maintenance requirements. It will be a hybrid vehicle, ensuring in this way lower gasoline and operating expenses for the Center.
