The main goal of the organization is to create and promote volunteer opportunities for all: young persons, students, professionals, families, retirees, and to reinforce their conscience as active citizens. The organization achieves its goals by matching nonprofit organizations with volunteers, by promoting volunteerism with activities geared to the general public, and by developing corporate volunteer programs. Since the two organizations commenced their activities in 2012, they have managed to cover more than 6,000 volunteer positions and have met the needs of 200 nonprofit organizations.
Volunteerism Program for Seniors
The grant regards the development of a six-month pilot volunteer program for retirees aged 65 and over. The program will have two axes, Skill-Based Volunteering and Lifelong Learning. The first axis of the program, Skills-Based Volunteering, will match persons aged 65 and over who have particular skills and hobbies with nonprofit organizations that are seeking volunteers possessing such skills. Ethelon will seek volunteers from at least 3 municipalities in Attica and Thessaloniki for a period of 6 months. The second axis of Life-Long Learning involves the instruction of educational programs directed to retired seniors for them to be able to develop their personal skills. The beneficiaries are the 40 elderly volunteers who will offer hundreds of hours of volunteer work towards nonprofit organizations and the 180 retirees who will participate in the lifelong learning program. Additionally, Ethelon plans to target 500 persons aged 65+ in order to raise awareness regarding the benefits of volunteerism. This program is especially significant as persons who have been professionally active for years face problems adjusting to daily life during retirement.
