Working towards this goal, Diabetes Nonprofit Organization raises awareness as well as speeches by scientists and doctors in the diabetes sector on prevention, information and education. Special emphasis is placed on educating children and the elderly. Since its founding, the organization has freely examined and informed about 50,000 persons, out of which 10,000 were seniors. It is estimated that approximately 10% of the Greek population suffers from diabetes, while a percentage of 3-4% does not know that it suffers from the disease. Awareness-raising and early diagnosis have been proven to be the best prevention for the disease.
Medical Examinations and Awareness-Raising
The grant regards diabetes diagnostic examinations for seniors in the Argosaronic Islands and towns in the mainland across from them for 12 months along with awareness-raising for the disease by specialized doctors. The beneficiaries are 1,500 elderly individuals who will be examined and approximately 2,500 seniors will be the recipients of the informational speeches and awareness-raising by the doctors. The majority of diabetes conditions can be treated if diagnosed early. Thus, the services offered by Diabetes Nonprofit Organization are of vital importance especially for seniors in need who cannot pay for related examinations.
