Food Bank Greece was founded in 1995 with the aim to fight hunger and decrease waste. It is the only organization in Greece that operates as a Food Bank and it is a member of the European Federation of Food Banks. Food Bank Greece accepts food donations and distributes them to 144 organizations, including 10 care homes, 21 child organizations, 5 rehabilitation centers, 17 organizations for people with disabilities and 7 centers for the support of vulnerable groups including refugees and homeless with 24,500 beneficiaries yearly. Since its founding, Food Bank Greece has distributed 16,500 tons of food. Food Bank Greece accepts food donations from various constituents including individuals, manufacturers and supermarkets. It also donates food products and cleaning / personal hygiene supplies that are appropriate for consumption but, for various reasons, cannot be marketed.
The grant regards the provision of food supplies to the 10 care homes that the Food Bank Greece already supports as well as to other non-profit organizations. The amount that will be allocated to each one of the 10 care homes will cover approximately 25% of the homes’ yearly needs in food supplies.
