Food Bank Greece was founded in 1995 with the aim to fight hunger and waste. It is the only member of the European Federation of Food Banks in Greece. Through its Athens and Thessaloniki facilities, it accepts food donations and distributes them to organizations in need. It also supplies food, cleaning and personal hygiene products appropriate for consumption but which cannot be marketed for labeling and packaging reasons. By utilizing such products, which are usually disposed of or destroyed, Food Bank Greece contributes to the decrease of wastefulness. In 2011, Food Bank Greece helped feed 20,000 people in need by distributing 1,000 tons of food supplies to 200 organizations.
The grant regards the provision of food supplies that are not donated in sufficient amounts to meet demand.
