People Behind was founded in 2017, with the aim of integrating and empowering the elderly through life-long learning, digital training and intergenerational communication through voluntary work. From 2017 to 2020, People Behind completed 5 pilot programs with 210 beneficiaries, offering 320 hours of recreational activities and 68 hours of training in technology. This was done in collaboration with the Municipality of Athens and Innovathens. Since 2018 People Behind also offered, through the ActionAid Epikentro Community Center, educational programs and theatre groups for individuals aged 65+. The University for Seniors program recently started as a pilot in the Gazi area of Athens and was a tremendous success with 120 elderly participants in the first round of seminars, and over 300 applications to join. The aim of the University for Seniors is to improve the quality of life for those aged 65+ in Athens, promoting healthy and active ageing.
The grant regards the support of the University for Seniors program, which will take place over a 9-month period and will aim to activate and improve the social, mental and physical well-being of 107 individuals over 65 years of age. The University for Seniors will include a series of seminars including: Philosophy, European History, English, Understanding Digital Logic, and Physical Education for the elderly. The workshops relate to People Behind’s three targets of healthy and active ageing including: life-long learning, digital integration & training, and improving physical well-being.
