Nestor Psychogeriatric Association
The Nestor Psychogeriatric Association was founded in 2001 with the aim of providing services to senior citizens who suffer from dementia and psychiatric illnesses. Since 2002, the organization has been operating the only integrated Alzheimer’s center in Greece, including two Day Centers for persons with dementia and a clinic for short-term hospitalization of dementia patients. Additionally, Nestor operates two psychogeriatric care homes for elders with mental health issues. In cooperation with the social services of the 5 Municipalities, the Nestor Psychogeriatric Association operates memory clinics and provides psychiatric services. It also runs a SOS line for dementia caregivers. More than 4,500 elderly persons are the yearly recipients of the various services that the As-sociation provides and more than 250 patients with dementia are hospitalized in the short-term clinic each year.
The grant regards the continuation of the 160+ Care at Home program. The program, that began with a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, was originally directed to 160 dementia patients and their families, and with TIMA’s 2016 grant 40 additional fami-lies were added to the program. The multifaceted program includes: a) counselling in order to deal with behavioral disorders; b) information regarding dementia-related changes around the house and creative activities at home; c) information on legal and insurance issues; connection with the community; d) medical follow-up and prescriptions; e) home care such as house cleaning and company to the patient; f) monthly food coupons. The main goal of the program is to support the family/caregiver of the dementia patient through training.
