Volunteer Association Against Cancer of Achaia Prefecture
The Volunteer Association against Cancer of Achaia Prefecture “Agaliazo” was estab-lished in 2001 as a branch of the Volunteer Association against Cancer “Agaliazo” of Athens, which was formed in 1976. In 2011, Agaliazo of Achaia Prefecture became an independent nonprofit organization. The Association’s main activities include the coordination of daily teams of volunteers at the oncology departments of the 2 public hospitals of Patras in order to provide support and encouragement for cancer patients undergoing treatment. The volunteers of Agaliazo organize informational events at schools regarding the effects of cancer; they coordinate informational campaigns in the city of Patras and the greater region. Through its work, Agaliazo’s volunteers also inform people about the necessity of preventive checkups and organize volunteer training seminars. In addition, Agaliazo advocates for patient rights and collects food and medicine for the indigent families of cancer patients.
The grant regards the expansion of a free cancer screening program that will be directed mostly to people over 50 years of age who live in remote mountainous/agricultural areas of the Ilia Prefecture. The same year-long program was implemented in Achaia Prefecture in 2017. The program will be structured in the same way: it will have a team of 6 volunteer doctors (dermatologist, oncologist-gynaecologist, urologist, gastroenterologist, pulmonologist, psychiatrist) who will visit 7 areas in Ilia Prefecture for 3 days each. The team of doctors will be supported by additional volunteer nurses and health professionals. During each visit to a particular region, there will be an event held to inform local citizens about cancer. Approximately 800 persons from Ilia Prefecture will be examined, 75% of who will be over 50 years of age.
