Rescue GR was founded in 2005 with the aim of providing assistance in Greece and abroad in emergency situations such as natural disasters and humanitarian crises. Additionally, through humanitarian missions, it provides emergency pharmaceutical and food assistance towards afflicted populations. Rescue GR was integrated as a full member of the European Association of Civil Protection Volunteer Teams in 2017. The organization has 96 trained and certified volunteers; it also conducts training seminars for the public on issues such as first aid and earthquake readiness. The organization possesses its own wireless network, having received two wireless frequencies from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. In addition, Rescue GR attempts to raise public awareness for the development of civil society volunteerism. Rescue GR has participated in a variety of activities, with examples being the extinguishing of many forest fires, in pumping water after flooding in the Prefecture of Thessaloniki and the wider region, in a mission to Italy for the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake, and in the removal of a WW2 bomb that was found in the Thessaloniki area.
The grant regards the creation of a first aid and emergency response training program for the 14 Thessaloniki KAPIs. Each of the 14 KAPIs will be visited by Rescue GR trainers and volunteers who will be educating the elderly members through demonstration and simulation methods. A manual will be given to all participants at the end of each training session that summarizes all instructions and necessary information.
