Metropolis of Lampe, Sybritos and Sfakia

The Holy Metropolis of Lampe, Sybritos and Sfakia was founded in the 5th century bc in central Crete. The metropolitan region has approximately 10,000 inhabitants who reside in 110 villages. It is the largest region in geographical magnitude in Crete but the lowest in population. It is exclusively comprised of villages with no cities. The majority of its villages have less than 100 inhabitants, most of them over the age of 65. Indicative is the fact that there are only 3 schools in the region with 150 students in total. Due to its inhabitants’ demographics, the Metropolis of Lampe, Sybritos and Sfakia is known as the "Aged Metropolis". Due to the lack of urban center in the metropolitan region, the Metropolis operates various social programs in the villages of Spili and Fourfoura. The social programs include: fitness centers, performance/event spaces, library, religious bookstore, traditional dance classes, traditional musical instruments classes and a Hot Meal Program.

The Hot Meal Program involves the daily delivery of a day-long meals to the homes of 140 elders, 80 through Spili and 60 through Fourfoura. The use of two locations is necessary in order to reach all the surrounding villages. Every meal delivery includes: lunch, dinner, salad, bread and fruit. The Program started in 1999 in Fourfoura after a large number of elders visited the nearest hospital for malnutrition. The Spili location was added in 2002.
