Boroume was founded in 2012 in response to the economic crisis with the aim to decrease food waste by organizing the distribution of surplus food for people in need throughout Greece. The organization serves as a communication and coordination hub between food donors and recipient nonprofit organizations. It matches those who have to give with those who need to receive food. The recipient organizations include orphanages, homeless shelters and care homes. Boroume has developed more than 350 active permanent “bridges” and 150 non-permanent “bridges” between donors of food and recipient nonprofit organizations. Since its establishment, more than 6 million portions of food have been saved.
The grant regards the support of Boroume’s main program, Saving & Offering Food. The program’s goal is to find potential food donors and recipient welfare organizations as well as to create more permanent “bridges” for food contribution throughout Greece. In 2015 alone, 3,768,000 portions of food were saved through this program, an increase of almost 300% compared to 2014. On an average day, approximately 15,000 portions of food are saved.
