The Metropolis of Kisamos and Selinon was founded in 1860 in western Crete. The metropolitan region covers Kisamos and Selinon, two western eparchies of the prefecture of Chania. This region has about 28,000 inhabitants with a high percentage of elders residing in villages. The Metropolis operates a plethora of social programs for elderly beneficiaries, such as care at home programs, a telephone line for the support of elders, food-related programs and physiotherapy centers. The Annousakeio Care Home and Rehabilitation Center was founded in 1970 with the aim to offer shelter to the elderly women of the Kisamos and Selinon regions. In 2015, about 90 elders were residing at the Care Home. Τhe Annousakeio Care Home is divided in 2 wings: one that specializes in dementia and one that operates as a traditional care home. Additionally, post hospitalization care is offered to patients through the Rehabilitation Center.

Cognitive Training Program

The grant regards the acquisition of a mental strengthening software system, which is directed to persons over 60 years of age that face mild to medium loss of memory and other cognitive functions. The software aims to exercise, stabilize, and improve the cognitive functions of users, through exercises that are carried out on desktop computers. The cognitive functions that are exercised are: perception, language, attention, direction, memory, organization and planning. During the sessions, the user with the guidance of a psychologist or social worker, follows an individualized program of cognitive training that is composed of a variety of exercises.
